Delhi Days 2
After breakfast followed by a guided tour of Delhi, a bustling metropolis which
is in fact really two distinct cities – the colorful bazaars and Mughal architecture
of Old Delhi contrasting with the formal splendour of Lutyen’s New Delhi.
City tour of New Delhi by air-conditioned car: Visit the Qutab Minar ~ the 239ft
sandstone tower is an Indo-Islamic architectural wonder of ancient India. The complex
has a number of other important monuments- the gateway built in 1310, also visit
the Humanyun’s tomb - One of the most spectacular Mughal buildings. Humanyun’s tomb
was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1993. Built by Haji Begum, the widow
of Humanyun’s, the second Mughal Emperor, the mausoleum is known to the precursor
of world famous Taj Mahal. Built with a cost of one and a half million rupees, the
monuments heralded the construction of garden-tombs on the Indian subcontinent &
lastly drive through Rashtrapati Bhawan, India Gate & other important government
buildings. Later, drive past the historic Red Fort - Shah Jehan’s elegant citadel
in red sandstone, which was built as an octagon measuring 900m by 550m and surrounded
by a 9-meter deep moat, which was at its inception fed by the waters of the Yamuna
River. Very near the Fort is the Jama Masjid (Friday Mosque), India’s largest mosque,
also built by Shah Jahan.
Take an interesting RICKSHAW RIDE through Old Delhi – a truly memorable experience.
Stroll through the bustling markets and bazaars and get a feel for life in India's
capital city
Chandni Chowk meaning the ‘Moonlight Square’, was designed and laid by Jahanara
Begum, Mughal emperor Shahajahan's daughter between the Red Fort and Fateh Puri
Masjid. In a way the street reflects the national unity, secularism and diversity
of India as it houses many important places of worship of major religions of the
world. The bazaar has several galis (lanes). Each of these galis represent a speciality
of this market, for example the parathawali gali famous for it's parathas. The bustling
bazaar hosts authentic Indian food, delicacies and sweets of more than 1,000 kinds,
to sarees with intricate embroidary. There are lots of narrow lanes with many shops
selling books, clothing, shoes and leather goods, electronic and consumer goods
and what not. The area, even more so than the rest of the city, is very congested
but a ‘not to be missed experience’.
Proceed for a dinner at Chor Bizarre. Chor Bizarre is the complete eating out experience
– great décor, distinct ambience enhanced by assorted Hindi and Wester, ‘50’s music,
wondrous cocktails, superlative food, charming ‘Old World’ service… It is only at
the Chor Bizarre that you can find a little bit of this and a little bit of that…
In the past they have been called ‘a gallery’, ‘an attic’ really clever’ and ‘quite
mad’ – all descriptions that we feel sum up the idea of Chor BizarreOvernight
